Frequently asked questions
What is the Global Sentiment Monitor?
A measurement of what the world’s news is saying, country by country, topic by topic, updated continuously. Coverage spans about 7,500 active news outlets in 193 countries; sentiment is scored by a multilingual machine-learning model fine-tuned for news rather than for product reviews or social media.
How is this different from social-media sentiment?
Social-media sentiment measures what users post about a topic. We measure what the press writes — reported, edited and sourced. The signal is slower-moving but considerably less noisy and far less manipulable. Editorial framing is then folded into the metric explicitly through credibility and press-freedom weighting.
What is press-freedom weighting?
On the headline sentiment surfaces, each article’s contribution is weighted by outlet credibility, by the press freedom of the outlet’s home country (V-Dem freedom-of-expression index, mapped through a bounded curve) and by the model’s confidence in its own verdict. Captured-media outlets are down-weighted but never silenced. Free-press coverage is essentially unaffected. This is documented openly on our methodology page.
How is the Monitor different from GDELT?
GDELT is a public-domain machine-coded news-tone series since 2000. It is dense in time but is a different instrument on a different scale and is not weighted for outlet credibility or press freedom. We use GDELT as one input to the historical calibration, but the live and historical headline number is our own model-consistent series — intensity-aware, multilingual, and tuned for news.
What languages do you cover?
The sentiment, topic and markets-classification models are all natively multilingual. Coverage is heavier for outlets that publish in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Arabic, Chinese and Russian, but the model scores any language the underlying transformer was trained on (about 100). Country attribution is multilingual and also recognises wire-service datelines.
How fresh is the data?
Articles are scraped, scored and aggregated continuously. The customer-facing dashboard caches its data layer and refreshes three times per business day at the EU, Asia and New York market opens. Markets and macro surfaces refresh hourly. Signals re-fire on the hour. A manual refresh is available on demand.
Is this a trading signal?
No. The Monitor is a research and analytical product. We surface divergence between sentiment and price, lead-lag relationships, macro narrative movers and pre-event positioning, but we do not produce a buy/sell recommendation. Customers integrate the data into their own models and processes.
Do you offer an API?
Yes. The read-only REST API and an MCP server for AI-agent integration share one credential core with the GSCI Portal’s API. Keys are minted in the GSCI Portal’s Settings.
